These restored messages come from the Quilt History List, an online forum where quilt historians, collectors, researchers, appraisers, and enthusiasts discussed antique quilts and related textiles. The archive dates from 1996 through approximately 2016 and is being restored gradually. Sign up in the form at the bottom of the page if you want to know when a new page is added. Original spelling, opinions, formatting, and inactive links may remain unchanged.
Primary topics of this QHL Digest:

- Scissors Quilted in Quilts — Superstition or Decoration? — Members report finding scissors quilted or embroidered in antique quilts, discuss whether scissors carry any folklore curse, and share examples from crazy quilts and redwork.
- Soap, Detergent, and Quilt-Washing Chemistry — The Orvus Paste discussion continues with posts on hard-water effects, proper rinsing, and a request for chemists to clarify product labeling. (see the article on cleaning antique quilts)
- Dewhurst Sylko Thread History — British, Australian, and American members compare notes on Dewhurst Sylko cotton thread, its labeling, and its era of availability.
- Joining Quilt Batting — Members share techniques for piecing batting together, including whip-stitching butted edges and cutting overlapped layers in a curved line. (see the article on quilt batting)

Hi all,
One of the first books we reviewed in the VQTS newsletter 2 years ago was this book…..it is really a great resource book. It explains how fabric is woven, how thread is spun, how batting is made. I think that anyone interested in textiles and particularaly quilting *needs* a copy of this book in their library…….
No affiliation to Harriet, and all that stuff…….I just think that this book is a must for your reference library!

Laura…thanks for calling attention to the article in QUILT. I had received the issue, but hadn’t even opened it. A nice picture of you! I also get QNM and read it as quickly as everything else which means it sits for a few weeks! It isn’t lack of interest, just too much traveling! You inspired me …I finally caught up to 1999 with every mag! It also helped that the electricity was off for hours to: day….<grin>

I would like to invite you all to see the quilts of “Child Abuse Quilts – Revealing and Healing the Pain of Child Abuse” http://members.tripod.com/mbgoodman/caq/caq1.html The web site now includes pictures of all 28 quilts, as well as the artist statements for each. These powerful quilts will be travelling and are available for display during 1999 and 2000. Complete information about this is also available at the web site. If possible, could I ask that you spread this news to other mailing lists that you subscribe to? It’s been announced on rec.crafts.textiles.quilting and on quiltart. Any others would be appreciated.
Thanks very much!
